Biological filtration is an essential component of RAS systems and is designed to eliminate the toxicity produced by natural biological processes of protein metabolism by fish from food administered. It also eliminates the toxicity of fish that produced by respiration and decomposition processes at the water organizmelor . The nitrogen produced by the breathing water systems and protein metabolism comes in combination with hydrogen from the water and depending on the pH or in other words, the acidity or alkalinity of the water and the temperature may become a highly toxic compound, as is the unionized form of NH3 -N ionized form of NH4 -N or less toxic than the first but also lethal concentration above a certain level. To eliminate or reduce this toxic compound our existing copying nature using biological processes millions of years in the wild , using a class of specialized bacteria in decomposition and nitrogen conversion.
These bacteria are completely harmless to aquatic life and to humans they are in air, soil and water for over three billion years. Each ” handful of earth ” are billions of such bacteria. Names of the nitrifying bacteria Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter are encountered. In conclusion they will draw existing biochemical energy and nitrogen compounds will turn into nitrites and then into nitrates. In this way the toxicity converted into less toxic compounds can be controlled and reduced to a tolerable value of the culture systems. These bacteria , however, require very extensive areas they growth of developing and colonizing space as a film that is deposited on the surfaces of contact between solids and water environments .
